About Us

The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is an accredited, non-profit, member-supported land conservation organization founded in July 1981. Preserving land is the heart of our work ensuring a plentiful supply of safe, clean drinking water, productive land for agriculture, sustainable land for wildlife and forests to thrive, and neighborhood parks and natural areas for people to walk, play, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The Land Conservancy has been assisting landowners for more than 30 years to preserve their land, and has preserved more than 24,000 acres. Our office is located at WildAcres Preserve in Montville Township, Morris County, New Jersey.

Job Summary

The Director of Development and Communication is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing all of The Land Conservancy’s fundraising including the major gifts program, annual fundraising, grant writing, corporate and foundation giving, membership outreach, and special events. The Development Director works closely with the President and the Board of Trustees in all fundraising endeavors. The Director oversees a staff comprised of a Communications Manager, Development Assistant, and Membership Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Frequently meet prospective donors and supporters to foster relationships and establish effective communications
  • Grow our major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors
  • Oversee grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements
  • Manager our corporate and foundation giving programs
  • Direct the annual fundraising program, including mailings and membership outreach
  • Oversee donor database and tracking systems
  • Manage special events – focusing on our annual golf event
  • Attend Board, Development, and Event Committee meetings
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff on the planning and implementation of special events
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff on the creation of publications and communications
  • Oversee gift recognition programs
  • Coordinate our planned giving program
  • Perform other related duties as requested

Qualifications

  • Experience soliciting gifts, working directly with donors and coaching others to solicit gifts
  • Experience building a development program
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in major gift fundraising and grants
  • Familiar with the local foundation community
  • Strong event management skills
  • Possess the skills to work with and motivate staff, board members and other volunteers
  • Desire to get out of the office and build external relationships
  • Significant hands-on experience with donor relations database and familiar with reports and queries
  • Projects a professional presence that will be compatible with the expectations of potential funders
  • Is a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls
  • Is organized and exhibits “follow through” on tasks and goals
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience and other qualifications

Requirements/Other

  • 3 years minimum experience in professional fundraising
  • Bachelor’s degree

The Land Conservancy prides itself on the high quality, high caliber student that works with our staff on planning, acquisition and stewardship projects. For over 15 years we have worked with students with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Our interns are bright, passionate, engaging individuals focused on the environment and making our landscape sustainable and protected for future generations. Interns who have worked with our staff have gone on to leadership roles across the country working with state land preservation agencies, county planning departments, and private consulting firms designing greenways, neighborhood improvement projects, and master plans.
Since 2000 we have hired over 85 interns, from institutions throughout the country and from a diversity of majors; all with an enthusiasm for the outdoors and land conservation.
