Reporter I – The Features Department serving The Record and the Herald News has an opening for a full-time Reporter I. This reporter will produce engaging stories that explore a variety of topics, but generally concentrate on how health, fitness and food and their significance to North Jersey residents. In general, the reporters must initiate, research, report, interview and write news features on their beat and generate trend stories.

Required skills include producing stories (especially health and nutrition ) that are easy to understand and help the reader understand an issue, writing on tight deadlines  in a critical and engaging manner, and identifying and/or taking a story in the news and making it relevant and engaging to North Jersey readers .

  The successful candidate must have at least two years of daily newspaper reporting experience, or equivalent. Hours may vary and may include working occasional weekends as part of a schedule rotation.

Reporter II The Record has an opening for a full-time Reporter II to cover breaking news on the 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift. The ideal candidate should be able to juggle multiple story assignments, develop sources who are reticent to speak on the record, write quickly and clearly for the web, update news reports frequently and combine feeds from colleagues into coherent stories. The applicant also needs superb news judgment, the ability to work independently and a knack for staying composed under extreme pressure. A minimum of three years of daily reporting experience or its equivalent is required.  Varied work schedule

Reporter I – The Record has an opening for a Reporter I.  Duties include covering assigned beats news issues.  The successful candidates will write breaking news primarily for the web, feed bureau blogs and use social media. They must also possess strong online and multimedia skills; good oral, written and PC skills; and the ability to regularly mine the beat and their sources for news. Some enterprise reporting also will be expected.  Candidates also must be accessible for assignments during and outside regular office hours.  Applicants must have at least two years of daily newspaper reporting experience, or equivalent. Varied work schedule.

Digital Specialist – The Record has an opening for a part-time Digital Specialist. This position will tone digital images on deadline for The Record and Herald News, northjersey.com, and our news photo sales website, My Capture. It also will analyze color of incoming digital image files in the AGT (or other DAM system), determine and implement solutions in Photoshop; tag and export corrected press ready images into Prestige for newspaper production, or web, or photo sales server; research pictures in DAM system; check caption information; and handle administrative duties including archiving, inventorying photo equipment and answering telephones. Position requires: college or related technical school training, with at least one year on the job experience, or three years on the job experience in digital imaging and/or news photography; expert-level skills in Photoshop, and Photo Mechanic; expertise in color analysis, color digital image management correction, and pre press color applications; strong computer skills in both PC and MAC environments; ability to move image files into and out of the DAM from ftp or email servers; ability to learn new technology and adapt to new workflows quickly; ability to work with minimum supervision; and good communication skills with ability to write captions.  Varied schedule with nights, weekend, and on-call work required.

Editorial Assistant – The Record’s business section is seeking a full-time editorial assistant to handle various duties, including receiving and formatting submissions from freelancers and news syndicates; working with syndicates and freelancers and the Associated Press on stories, photos and data they provide; receiving and formatting financial charts; preparing the weekly On the Move column of executive promotions and hires as well as the weekly business meetings calendar; helping the editors gather and process photos; and handling phone calls and emails from readers, and do research for stories. This position also offers opportunities to write business stories. Candidates must demonstrate ability to report and write business news stories on a regular basis.
